Directions…
Due to being a very new building it doesn’t come up correctly on some old GPS’s. Google maps is the most accurate .
From Lake Tekapo – we are approximately 30 minutes from Tekapo on the main road SH8 or Tekapo – Twizel Rd. Once you come around onto Lake Pukaki you need to drive around the lake approximately 5.2km (3.23 miles) until you see the lodge. We are the first building you will come to on the lake, we are up a hill on the left hand side of the road not the lake side. You will be able to see the solar panels on the roof and opposite the drive is a blue “Lodge” road sign.
From Twizel – We are approximately 13km (8 miles) from Twizel on SH8 past the Mt Cook turn off, past Aoraki Salmon Visitor Centre and we are a further 2.5 km (1.6 miles) past there on your right. There is a “600m Lodge on right” sign and then around a corner there is a blue “Lodge” sign opposite our driveway.
Automatic Gates – We have recently installed automatic entrance gates, either they will open automatically when you drive up close to them or you will have to push the intercom button to talk to reception and we will open the gates remotely. If all else fails please call +64 3 9711 871.

Hilary SmytheOwner of this lovely original Victorian farmhouse, Hilary has great pleasure in making your stay a retreat with elegant surrounds and a rural atmosphere.
Originally from a family of art dealers in Europe, Hilary specialized in dealing in antique jewellery before coming to New Zealand and farming sheep and beef cattle on a large hill country farm. A move to a career in landscape design came next, born out of her mother’s love of flowers…and perhaps father’s fondness for digging things up.
After returning to art dealing for a while, having a gallery in Auckland’s Newmarket, the chance to restore Miller House seemed a great way to go back to the land. The garden is an ongoing development, as gardens always are, and to be able to share this glorious location is a privilege.
“The West Verandah room has a small in-room washbasin but shares a bathroom with the Kaipo Suite, so can only be booked in conjunction. There is separate access though French doors to both the bathroom and the garden.”

Set in the middle of farmland in Gladstone with views to the Tararua Ranges, rolling hills and large, open skies the Summit Lodge offers guests an opportunity to sample ‘real New Zealand’. Off the main tourist track, the Wairarapa is often referred to as a ‘well-kept secret’. Stunning coastal walks – often with no other people around; beautiful bush walks in conservation areas; boutique wineries and many opportunities to meet the local farmers – particularly down at the local country inn.
The lodge features many environmental and sustainable features and has an Enviro-Gold assessment to complement its five-star quality rating. From its origins as a sheep paddock back in 2008, there are now extensive gardens surrounding the lodge planted using permaculture principles.
Guests have the opportunity to dine in at the Summit Lodge with prior arrangement. Local lamb and venison feature as well as vegetables and fruit from the garden, home baking and home-made preserves. Dining is sociable, informal and fun! Guests often comment on the county-style breakfasts which set you up for the day. Bread is baked on-site every day, jams are made from fruit from the garden, eggs are provided by our own free-range hens, mushrooms are from the local mushroom farm and bacon and sausages are locally cured using organic meat. Barista-style Espresso coffee is available as well as a range of teas.
The lodge is designed in a U-shape. Guests are accommodated in one wing of the lodge where are there are three en-suite rooms – each with individual heat pump/air conditioning as well as private patio area. Guests have shared use of large lounge which features reclining seating and a home theatre system as well as office for downloading photos or checking emails. In the lounge, there is a fridge and microwave for guest convenience as well as a range of teas and coffee and home baking. There is complimentary wifi available as well as lockable storage for bicycles.

Your hosts, Tracey and Jim, both have corporate backgrounds and have travelled extensively – both within NZ and overseas. Both are passionate about good food and wine – particularly the local, seasonal produce. They enjoy nothing more than sharing a meal with guests and swapping stories whilst appreciating wine from one of the many boutique wineries found locally. Also living at the Summit Lodge are Dexter – the Chocolate Labrador (who loves people and food) and five friendly cats so guests are guaranteed a warm welcome! There are also sociable alpacas to meet and free-range chickens.
Tracey is a keen photographer as well as Life Coach and Jim is a member of one of the local golf clubs and plays off a 7-9 handicap. If he can, he is happy to take guests for a game!
There are also a number of food and wine and music festivals held locally as well as iconic events such as the Golden Shears and Wings over Wairarapa so do contact us for details on what’s on during your visit! For the more energetic there are 9 golf courses within a 30-minute drive and there are many cycling circuits as well as both short and longer walks.

Your Hosts Clare and Peter….are well traveled, having lived and worked in the UK, France, Asia, US and Australaisia. They returned to New Zealand in 2003 to start up this new concept in accommodation. “Our objective was to create a place to relax – a friendly atmosphere, a supurb natural setting with five star comforts plus a high degree of privacy & personal space” says Clare. “Many aspects of the lodge are based on Gite d’Etapes we stayed in whilst living in France, which provide walkers, cyclists and other lovers of the outdoors good value accommodation and great regional cooking.”
Peter is Chairman of one of New Zealand’s largest community conservation groups, Friends of Flora and he spends his spare time hiking, birdwatching and cycling. Clare is a great foodie and loves relaxing with a new cookbook or getting out cycling and hiking.
