Lakestone Lodge

Lakestone Lodge – where Luxury and nature surround you.  Every room and bathroom in the completely off grid eco lodge share stunning views northward over Lake Pukaki to the Southern Alps. On calm days New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki Mt Cook, can be seen reflected in the turquoise glacial waters of the lake. In contrast, mountain storms, rolling in over the alps, can be viewed from the comfort and warmth of this perfectly positioned luxurious lodge. In the evenings, after watching the sun setting over the mountains, guests can enjoy some of the clearest night skies in the world as Lakestone Lodge is located in the heart of the world’s biggest International Dark Sky Reserve.

With a chef on site you can enjoy a full cooked breakfast or dinner featuring local cuisine or have a picnic made up to take with you while you explore the surrounding outdoor playground. Enjoy the relaxing vibe of the lodge with a massage in the therapy room, take the time to enjoy a movie in the theatre room or go exploring on one of the many walking or cycling trails directly accessible from the lodge

Directions…

Due to being a very new building it doesn’t come up correctly on some old GPS’s. Google maps is the most accurate .

From Lake Tekapo – we are approximately 30 minutes from Tekapo on the main road SH8 or Tekapo – Twizel Rd. Once you come around onto Lake Pukaki you need to drive around the lake approximately 5.2km (3.23 miles) until you see the lodge. We are the first building you will come to on the lake, we are up a hill on the left hand side of the road not the lake side. You will be able to see the solar panels on the roof and opposite the drive is a blue “Lodge” road sign.

From Twizel – We are approximately 13km (8 miles) from Twizel on SH8 past the Mt Cook turn off, past Aoraki Salmon Visitor Centre and we are a further 2.5 km (1.6 miles) past there on your right. There is a “600m Lodge on right” sign and then around a corner there is a blue “Lodge” sign opposite our driveway.

Automatic Gates – We have recently installed automatic entrance gates, either they will open automatically when you drive up close to them or you will have to push the intercom button to talk to reception and we will open the gates remotely. If all else fails please call +64 3 9711 871.

Hilary Smythe, host Miller HouseHilary Smythe

Owner of this lovely original Victorian farmhouse, Hilary has great pleasure in making your stay a retreat with elegant surrounds and a rural atmosphere.

Originally from a family of art dealers in Europe, Hilary specialized in dealing in antique jewellery before coming to New Zealand and farming sheep and beef cattle on a large hill country farm. A move to a career in landscape design came next, born out of her mother’s love of flowers…and perhaps father’s fondness for digging things up.

After returning to art dealing for a while, having a gallery in Auckland’s Newmarket, the chance to restore Miller House seemed a great way to go back to the land. The garden is an ongoing development, as gardens always are, and to be able to share this glorious location is a privilege.

The ResurgenceYour Hosts Clare and Peter….are well traveled, having lived and worked in the UK, France, Asia, US and Australaisia. They returned to New Zealand in 2003 to start up this new concept in accommodation. “Our objective was to create a place to relax – a friendly atmosphere, a supurb natural setting with five star comforts plus a high degree of privacy & personal space” says Clare. “Many aspects of the lodge are based on Gite d’Etapes we stayed in whilst living in France, which provide walkers, cyclists and other lovers of the outdoors good value accommodation and great regional cooking.”

Peter is Chairman of one of New Zealand’s largest community conservation groups, Friends of Flora and he spends his spare time hiking, birdwatching and cycling.  Clare is a great foodie and loves relaxing with a new cookbook or getting out cycling and hiking.
